Polyacrylonitrile Fibers Used in Concrete Can Play a Role in Cracking Prevention

Polyacrylonitrile fiber (PANF) is a novel reinforcing fiber used in asphalt or cement concrete to enhance strength and prevent cracking. It is a synthetic fiber made from polyacrylonitrile resin through a particular processing method. When mixed with cement concrete, its performance is similar to that of polypropylene fiber concrete. When used in asphalt concrete, it functions similarly to polyester fiber concrete.
PANF has a relatively small fiber diameter and a large specific surface area, with each gram providing tens of thousands of square meters. When dispersed in bitumen, the extensive surface area of the fibers acts as a wetting interface. In this interfacial layer, physical and chemical interactions occur between the asphalt and the fiber, allowing asphalt molecules to arrange themselves into a single layer on the fiber surface. This forms a structural asphalt interlayer with strong bonding. Additionally, the fibers and surrounding structural asphalt coat the aggregate surface, increasing the asphalt film thickness. This helps slow down asphalt aging and extends the service life of the pavement. Foreign experience indicates that SMA pavements with PANF can last 30-50% longer than traditional asphalt pavements.
The asphalt adsorbed by the criss-cross fibers increases the proportion of structural asphalt while reducing free asphalt. This enhances the viscosity and softening point of the mastic, thereby improving the stability of the SMA mixture
PANF fibers are randomly distributed in three dimensions within the mastic, which can block crack propagation in the mixture. This improves the self-healing ability and reduces crack formation in asphalt pavements. However, not all fibers have this reinforcing effect. For example, lignin and mineral fibers lack sufficient tensile strength and do not provide reinforcement. In contrast, polyacrylonitrile fibers have higher strength, making their reinforcing effect more pronounced.

Its unique adsorption properties, stabilizing effects, and reinforcing capabilities make it a valuable addition to modern pavement and construction materials, contributing to enhanced durability and longevity.
